Support has been added for any monitor size, several parameters of the game have been changed, and a resource flag has been added to deactivate the "fade-to-black" which has caused problems for some people. Multiple monitors still give the program trouble, though; we apologize for that problem, and will work on it when we can. Asterax is a single- or multi-player arcade game for Macintosh computers, growing out of the classic arcade game Asteroids(tm), but with new strategic elements. Asterax makes use of many features of the modern Macintosh system, including multiple screen sizes and 4-channel sound. Features: Classic arcade action with new strategic elements Smooth animation on Motorola 680x0 and PowerPC processors Full support for multiple monitor sizes -- allowing you to actually use all of your monitor, whether you have a Color Classic or a 21" multi-sync. Four-channel sound support Completely modeled and rendered 3-dimensional graphics System Requirements: A Macintosh computer with a Motorola 68020, 030, 040, or PowerPC 601 processor System 7.0 system software or later A monitor supporting 16 or 256 colors (multiple monitor support is shaky right now) At least 4 MB of available RAM -- Asterax has been tested on a 4 MB system using Connectix RamDoubler(tm) without any problems. Asterax has been successfully tested on machines ranging from a Duo 210 to a IIvx to a Quadra 800, and all of the PowerMacs (as of May 8th, 1994...) The Finder keeps every folder icon in a separate hidden file. The known versions of the Finder (7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1) do not delete this file when removing a custom folder icon. They only delete the icon resources from the file. Note that no other information is kept into these "Icon" files. An FKEY is a little program you can start up by pressing a Command-Shift-number combination on your keyboard. You really need this FKEY if you own a Imagewriter or a StyleWriter, and would like to decently print texts. The Apple drivers for these printers do not include a "Fractional Widths" option, so the printed text is misaligned. Analysis includes finding the point of contact of the block on the surface, the numerical values for the normal and friction forces, magnitudes of the applied force to cause impending motion, and the animation of the motion in the case of tipping or sliding. This is done automatically whenever any parameter is altered. The demo version is restricted to the default slope inclination, hence the "Open Input File..." option is disabled as well. All other operations are fully operational. This application has a sharaware fee of $10. If you are interested please send orders to the address above with your payment. Good question. Printer Patrol is a control panel which allows you to set up a list of your frequently used printers. If you print to one of these printers, Printer Patrol does nothing. So he deserves the creative credit. This clock is an arc ranging from the hour-hand to the minute-hand. I didn't look into Tiggr's source, but I figure that with Display PostScript the code was much neater that mine, I use Regions to create smooth drawing (instead of off-screen drawing) which results in a nice "Multiple" colour effect. I contribute this module to Lloyd Wood, if it wasn't for him, I would have left my compiler alone today... Anyways, have fun! This is freeware. pooh@stack.urc.tue.nl 1.2: * Made the maximum clock size fixed to prevent possible memory problems on very large screens. * Decreased the amount of memory needed. * Added a "one single" colour option. * Randomised the initial direction and colour. * The hour and minute hands now move every second, like any real clock would. * Removed -by request of Tiggr himself- the second-hand. * Changed move options to "Not at all", "Once per second" or "Continuously". The latter is only really useful on faster susyems. Got a Mac? Got a screensaver? Read the Screensaver FAQ by Lloyd Wood! It has a new user interface to implement more useful ways to design and analyze a truss. Some of the features implemented cover- * Create a new truss design, * Alter the geometry of an existing truss design interactively through moving joint locations or by the addition/removal of truss members, truss supports or truss joints, * Apply loads on a truss, * Produce free body diagrams of the entire truss or for selected pins, * Produce a color (pattern) graphical display of the load distribution in the individual members with the color (and pattern) of the members denoting tension or compression showing the relative magnitude of the load, * Button shortcuts to implement common operations without extensive menu access. * Implement Method of Sections and Method of Joints interactively, * Create QuickTime movies of a car traveling over the truss. It no longer shows the "Model Average" bar graph in the next to last screen and in the last screen it screams "Machine File Missing" (when the sexy voice is working, it really does scream) and there is no history of previous runs and their vertical bars. I reinstalled MacEKG with no improvement or change. When I run the pre-update system I (wisely!) backedup, MacEKG executes as expected. It doesn't have any of the bugs MountImage does, although it may have some of it's own which haven't shown up yet, but it certainly appears solid. It _can_ open more than one image though. You just need to drop them all on it at once when no images are mounted. It's only real flaw, IMHO, is that you can't run Apple's installers from the munged images. You see, the installer wants to quit all apps which would involve quitting MungeImage, but it has open files on the disk, so it won't quit and therefore it's a catch-22. My advice is, don't try this at home kids. Since MungeImage comes with source, it should be relatively simple for someone to hack it up into an INIT which uses Gestalt to communicate with the app and make persistant images, completely replacing MountImage. So, whoever has the time and inclination, go for it. Jon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 May 1994 21:24:23 +0300 From: bnhirsch@dapsas1.weizmann.ac.il (David L. That is what we had to do here in my office for our modems. Our PBX Comdial phones use all six of the RJ-11 leads so it required a trip from someone from the Utilities Department to wire a regular two-lead jack. The GeoPort, like any other regular modem, uses only two leads. Once that is done, you can use the GeoPoop [sic] modem, or any modem for that matter. Your dialing sequence will need to include an "8," to aquire an outside line. I don't claim programming expertise, but I can't find even similar (much less exact same) code between MountImage 1.2b2 and MungeImage 1.0.1 (which doesn't mean that Mounin MungeImage--I just can't verify that it is). I just went through this with an 18-month-old pb100, also used almost entirely on wall plug power. Nevertheless the battery has quit holding charge -- after a little bit of this the machine also drained the backup batteries, the little lithium cells, causing all sorts of oddness (like apparent hard disk format failures; MacChek told me to reformat!!). After much phoning around I fond replacement batteries from Dynamic Engineering at FAX 408-336-3840, VOICE 408-336-8891 (every other place I called was out, backordered or didn't know where to find them). Got my replacment from DE and the Mac's quite happy now. (Also replaced the lithium cells). When I RTFM, I found both types of battery are said to last 'about a year'. Is this drive worth getting? >Are there any compatibility problems with any of the current crop of >CD-ROM-based games? I have not bought this drive yet, but I have done some research into it. As usual, the software that comes with the hardware is at least as important as the hardware itself. In this case, the driver that comes with this drive is a unique program contracted out by MacWarehouse to some consulting firm of which I have never heard. I couldn't get MacWarehouse to tell me what disk formats the driver supports, even though I asked them directly, so I have to assume the worst case -- that it only supports Macintosh HFS and Kodak PhotoCD. I need software that will read ISO-9660 and DOS disks, and possibly High Sierra disks as well, if that's any different from the other two. (I suspect it might just be another name for one of them.) So I asked if the MacWarehouse drive could be driven by the Apple CD ROM driver, which supports those disk formats, and the answer is no, it can't. So finally I asked what the internal mechanism in the drive is, and they were able to tell me that. I used that information in a call to FWB, who make the highly regarded CD ROM Toolkit, a replacement CD ROM driver and software-based accelerator, and they told me that yes, their product does work with this mechanism *and* it supports all of the disk formats I need it to support. CD ROM Toolkit is around $40 from MacWarehouse. So, to be safe, I'd call the cost of this drive $240, because I wouldn't get it without CD ROM Toolkit. -- Pete Gontier, CTO, Integer Poet Software; gurgle@netcom.com C credo: "Trust the programmer." I've been on the bleeding edge of Mac technology so often that this time all I wanted was a midrange computer with ROMs built in this decade. The beast that arrived today has good and foul points. I hate its lack of an external drive port. But I knew that from last year's C650 for Leslye, so I can't say I am surprised. I still think it is stupid. I love that its internal CD-ROM drive doesn't require a carrier. Just pop the disc into the tray. Gee, how long has it taken for computer vendors to catch up with audio CD types? Back to hate. The non-auto-inject floppy drive would be a nuisance even if it worked properly. It is a bore to have to remember to push the disk all the way in, instead of inserting it most of the way and having the drive grab it and continue the insertion. Heck, if that was all I had to do, I could live with that. But ejecting a floppy doesn't quite. Not all the time. Or even most of the time today. The sumbitch ejects just a hair above the opening in the Q650's case. As in it doesn't. I must reach in with a finger and push the disk down a tad to get actual ejection. That certainly never occurred with what I call "real" Mac floppy drives. I dunno about y'all, but I'm disappointed. Mostly because of the dumb floppy drive that'd be a bore even if it worked right. I can't offer any insights into causes or cures, but I can assure you that the problem you cite exists in other environments than your 660av/GeoPort/MacSLIP setup. I call a commercial service provider on a SupraFAX 14.4 modem running on a Mac IIci using MacTCP 2.0.4 and InterSLIP 1.0fc3, and I experience exactly the symptom you describe, also "quite often." The only solution I have found is to disconnect and re-dial. Unfortunately, I don't discover that my SLIP connection is lost (the modem still maintains the carrier) until I try to connect with my mail or news server or a remote site. Even then, (since some delays in establishing connections are legitimate) I am forced to wait out the timeout (in whatever utility program I am using to request the server or remote connection) before concluding that my SLIP connection is indeed lost. I have given up, for the moment, on maintaining a consistently reliable SLIP connection, and would be now be greatful just for a utility that would give me a visual indicator or some other sign (in something like real time) that my SLIP connection has indeed gone out. As long as my modem maintains carrier the meter is running, and I am getting tired of wasting all this connect time.
